Fat Ham: I am him, he is me

     When Mrs. Valentino first mentioned Fat Ham at the end of junior year, I was excited to see this play but also perplexed. Why is it called Fat Ham? What’s this play about? I soon found out on October 9th with all 12 AP classes. The play started with a bang, immediately delving into some raunchy humor. I had no idea what direction it was headed, wondering what the bigger theme could be when the entire dynamic only had humor so far. However, it quickly became a bit too real, too fast even. Juicy being the butt of the joke often in his family whether it’s his alternative style or education pursuits is something many POC children can relate to, having parallels to my own life. His internal conflict of whether he should stay true to his morals or fulfill his family’s (late father’s) goals/dreams is a problem that has plagued sons/daughters for centuries, contributing to the dysfunctional family dynamic.
