The Great Gatsby: Afterlife

Image
Myrtle Wilson wakes up in the same outfit the night before, “an afternoon dress of cream-colored chiffon.” As she opens her eyes, she sees in front of her a wall that has the green words “Welcome! Everything is fine.” plastered across it. Her heart starts racing, with worry running through her head. She decides to get to the bottom of this strange illusion and frantically gets off the white leather couch. As Myrtle searches the place she finds a room where a man in a suit, wearing a crisp blue suit, glasses, and a head of white is seated at his desk. She hurriedly approaches him, screaming “WHAT’S GOING ON? WHERE AM I? AM I IN THE FUTURE? I WANT MY TOMMMMM hahaha I mean George!” The man stares blankly at her for a few seconds and then clears his throat. “Oh yeah, I should inform you of this. Hi, I’m Michael. You Myrtle Wilson are dead! You are gone, no more, donezo. Your life on Earth is finished. You are in the next phase of your life, the afterlife. You will be going to the bad...

The Great Gatsby: A Cautionary Tale about Unchecked Ignorance

Image
One thing I learned from The Great Gatsby is whether it’s the 1920’s or 2020’s, rich people will always find a way to use their wealth and privilege to ruin the lives of the oppressed. Look at celebrities in Hollywood, supporting Israel over Palestine…      When the first car incident occurs at Gatsby’s party, it speaks volumes regarding the carelessness of rich people. They have so many ways to spend their money and choose to spend it on a new invention that if not used properly can injure others. But why would they care right? They just get drunk because fulfilling their desires matters more than human lives.      Unfortunately, that ignorant behavior remains. Celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Noah Schnapp support Israel in the recent attacks by Hamas, a militant group in Palestine. They view it as the worst human rights abuse to happen and if you don’t support Israel you support terrorism, which couldn’t be further from the truth. T...

The Great Gatsby: My View of it a Century After its Release

Image
In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it focuses on the American Dream and the pursuit of happiness through gaining wealth in the 1920’s. It follows the narration of Nick Carraway who shares his observations on these issues and the people around him. I don’t know why but so far this book feels so dystopian.     The problems in some of these characters' lives show how out of touch they are. While some people are simply worried about making it in a new country others are busy complaining about those said people’s existence. For instance Tom and Daisy Buchanan. Tell me again why they’re complaining. All because of the existence of immigrants or anyone else of non-white origin being near them?          While people like them (bigots) are off being enclosed from the rest of society fearing immigrants moving to the United States taking over, those same immigrants are worrying their livelihood will be taken from them. How do ...

Critical Thinking Explained: Dumbed Down Version

Image
The thought process of critical thinking is inspired by the scientific attitude, which consists of curiotisty skepticism, and humility. These three things make people ask themself is this backed up by evidence or is it all in my head? How do I know this? This way of thinking makes people analyze the warped aspects of their thinking, critique the source of their knowledge, and rate conclusions created. No matter what the situation is, critical thinkers will always ask these questions whether it’s listening to a debate or listening to music.  Critical thinkers cringe immensely when they hear simple-minded people say stuff that is supposed to sound accurate because they think it does, when in reality it is very far from what’s actually happening. This includes things like “the earth is flat.” Critical thinkers on the other hand have the guts to acknowledge they can be wrong sometimes and base their gut feeling on what the evidence finds, not their feelings. This forces them t...
